>> DRIVING THE DAY: Google beats expectations, posts $10.74 EPS on revenue of $14.9 billion in Q3, by Brad Reed: "The $14.9 billion in revenue represented a 12% year-over-year increase from the revenue the company posted in the third quarter of 2012. One of the few negatives for Google on the quarter was that its cost-per-click -- a key metric used to determine how much money Google can charge for advertisements -- deceased by 8% year-over-year in Q3 2013. The company also posted some bad news from its Motorola Mobility segment, which saw its revenues decline from $1.78 billion in Q3 2012 to just $1.18 billion in Q2 2013 while posting a $248 million loss on the quarter." How We Got Here: A Shutdown Timeline

Now that the congressional standoff over the government shutdown and the debt ceiling has finally ended, here's a look back at the key events of the crisis:

Jan. 18

  • At a Republican retreat in Williamsburg, Va., GOP leaders agree not to force a debt ceiling showdown and to address deficit reduction demands later in the year.

Aug. 19

Aug. 21

  • 80 House Republicans sign a letter to Speaker John Boehner urging him to "affirmatively de-fund the implementation and enforcement of ObamaCare in any relevant appropriations bill brought to the House floor in the 113th Congress, including any continuing appropriations bill."

Sept. 20

  • House Republicans approve legislation that would defund the health care law while keeping the government open through Dec. 15. The White House has already said the president would veto such a measure.

Sept. 24-25

  • Ted Cruz stages 21-hour speech on the Senate floor to protest the Affordable Care Act.

Sept. 26

  • Boehner says President Obama needs to negotiate with Republicans on raising the debt limit. The Treasury has warned it will run out of "extraordinary measures" it has been using to keep paying the nation's bills by Oct. 17.

Sept. 27

  • The Democratic-controlled Senate strips language from the House bill that defunds Obamacare and sends legislation back to the House that keeps the government open through Nov. 15.

Sept. 29

  • The House passes another spending bill tied to the Affordable Care Act — this time voting to delay implementation of the law for one year and to repeal a medical device tax.

  • The House also votes to pay active-duty troops and some Defense Department civilian workers and contractors in the case of a shutdown. The Senate approves this bill and the president signs it on Sept. 30.

Sept. 30

  • Obama makes a statement to the media, saying a government shutdown is "entirely preventable if the House chooses to do what the Senate has already done, and that's the simple act of funding our government without making extraneous and controversial demands in the process."

  • Senate strips language from the House bill that delays the health law and repeals the medical device tax.

  • The House puts forth legislation that delays the health law's individual mandate for a year and requires members of Congress and their staffs to buy plans on the exchange without subsidies from the government. The Senate rejects that plan as well.

Oct. 1

  • Shutdown begins. The House stands by its language from the previous day and requests negotiations with the Senate, which the Senate rejects.

Oct. 2

  • The House begins passing piecemeal funding bills for programs and entities affected by the shutdown, including the national parks and the National Institutes of Health. The Senate refuses any bill that doesn't reopen the entire government.

Oct. 4

  • After an unnamed administration official is quoted saying it doesn't matter how long the shutdown lasts because "we are winning," Boehner tells reporters: "This isn't some damn game!"

Oct. 5

  • The House passes legislation to provide back pay to furloughed federal workers once the shutdown ends.

  • Obama tells The Associated Press that Boehner is the only obstacle to ending the shutdown.

Oct. 6

  • Boehner says House Republicans won't end the shutdown or raise the debt ceiling without negotiations.

Oct. 10

  • Boehner proposes a six-week extension of the debt limit if Obama negotiates over spending cuts.

  • The Senate passes House legislation to provide death benefits to the families of deceased military personnel during the shutdown.

Oct. 12

  • Boehner informs House Republicans that talks with the White House are stalled.

  • Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and his GOP counterpart, Sen. Mitch McConnell, begin meetings to negotiate funding the government and raising the debt ceiling.

  • Reid and McConnell say they're working toward a deal that would extend the debt limit through Feb. 7 and keep the government open through Jan. 15.

Oct. 15

  • House Republican leaders cancel a vote on Boehner's proposal to fund the government through Dec. 15, raise the debt ceiling through Feb. 7 and end federal health insurance subsidies for Congress and staff.

  • The rating agency Fitch warns that the United States' AAA credit rating is being reviewed for a possible downgrade.

Oct. 16

Oct. 17

  • President Obama signs the bill and the government reopens. Thousands of federal employees head back to work.

Prince Harry Opens Blast Injury Center in London

Fresh off a morning playing rugby, Prince Harry cleaned up for an appearance at the opening of the Royal British Legion Centre for Blast Injury Studies in London.

The red haired prince looked handsome in a dark blue suit and a striped tie as he toured the facility, even donning a personalized "HRH" lab coat to check out the "Shock Tube" Laboratory.

Taking up the cause, which was very important to his late mother, Princess Diana, Harry remarked "Today, I have had a brief insight into the work of the Center including how injured cells are analyzed. In the past I've met numerous service men and women injured in operations, many by IEDs and landmines. Their stories are harrowing and inspirational as I am sure you all know. Watching the IED simulation reminded me of the catastrophic trauma experienced by the human body during IED or mine-strikes."

He continued, "To me this makes their extraordinary stories of recovery all the more outstanding. This issue affects people on a global scale and whilst work at the Center is strongly focussed on military casualties, its findings will no doubt also provide significant humanitarian benefits across the world. The Royal British Legion and Imperial have joined forces to tackle this issue head on. Without this partnership the Centre would quite simply not become a reality."

'Game of Thrones' spoof trades drama for laughs

Pop culture

Keeping track of the numerous "Game of Thrones" characters just got a lot more interesting as they've been reimagined in a hilarious new spoof video from the folks at Bad Lip Reading.

Bad Lip Reading has previously taken on "Twilight," "The Hunger Games," President Obama, the NFL and much more. In this fake trailer for "Medieval Land Fun-Time World," Ned Stark is "Eddie," the manager of a theme park who has a week to get his lackluster employees whipped into shape for the park's grand opening. For almost six minutes, the video dubs new dialogue over scenes from "GoT."

All the bloody drama of HBO's fantasy series is drained and replaced with a cheesy soundtrack and laugh-worthy lines. The best scenes feature Joffrey "JoJo" Baratheon and Tyrion "Terry" Lannister. The spoof maintains two key things here — JoJo is still worth hating, and the gangster Terry is still the best character on the show.

Jamie Lannister is "Jimmy Whisper," who delivers all of his lines in hushed tones: "Today, I had a cheesesteak, then I got a Walkman," he tells Eddie. And Petyr "Petey" Baelish is a hit at the dinner table when he asks everyone how they liked "the kitten meat I put in my burgers everyone just ate."

The video is already headed toward 2 million views in less than a day. And BLR has put up outtakes and extended scenes, too.

The real "Game of Thrones" returns in 2014 for season four.

Cyrus' performance with Robin Thicke at the VMAs shocked many.

COLOGNE, Germany – MTV has confirmed that Miley Cyrus will be bringing her twerk to Amsterdam.

The popstar, whose explicit dancing at this year's VMAs caused a sensation, will perform live at MTV's European Music Awards in Amsterdam on Nov. 10.

VIDEO: MTV EMAs: Miley Cyrus Smuggled into Amsterdam in Redfoo's Suitcase

MTV already let the cat out of the bag, so to speak, with its promo video for the show, which featured host, Redfoo of dance music act LMFAO, trying to smuggle a scantily-clad Cyrus through customs at Amsterdam airport.

Other confirmed performers at this year's EMAs include Katy Perry and The Killers.

Ariana Grande will be the backstage host for the show, which will be broadcast live at 9 p.m. local time. Will Ferrell will be among the celebrity presenters at the awards, in character as his Anchorman 2 newsman Ron Burgundy.

How to sell and get the most money for your old iPad before upgrading to an iPad 5 or iPad mini 2

How to sell and get the most money for your old iPad before upgrading to an iPad 5 or iPad mini 2

Everything you need to know in order to get the best possible price for your old iPad before upgrading to an iPad 5 or iPad mini 2

If you plan on upgrading to an iPad 5 or iPad mini 2, selling your old iPad is a no brainer. Apple products hold their resale value very well. If you've taken good care of your iPad, you should have no problem finding it a new home and putting some cash in your pocket while doing it. Selling the old really does help you afford the new. If you're not sure how to sell, or if you just want to make sure you get the most money, or save yourself the most time and effort, possible, here's everything you need to know!

Quick guide

There's a ton of information provided below, and a lot of details for first time sellers. If you're a pro and just want to make sure you're not missing anything, here's a quick set of bullet points you'll want to pay attention to:

  • Wipe all data from your old device before you sell it. Seriously, nothing is worse than giving someone your personal information. Here's how.
  • Take great photos. People judge books by their covers. Clean it up so it looks like new and then take photos to prove it.
  • Include all the parts. The more you can include from the original box, the better! Again, perception matters.
  • Decide what's more important, money or time: If you want fast and easy, use a service like Gazelle. If you want maximum money no matter what, sell it yourself on Craigslist.

Again, we have tons of details below, so if you're uncertain about any aspect, keep reading!

How to prepare your iPad for sale

Before you actually sell your iPad, there are some steps you need to take before placing ads or making any commitments to sell it. These steps aren't only to help you get a higher price tag, they're to make sure your data and personal information is protected too.

Wipe your iPad and protect your data

Before you sell your old iPad to get a new one, you need to make sure all your stuff is off of it. You don't want to give the next owner access to all your old pictures, messages, accounts, and other private information, of course.

Clean up your iPad and take great pictures

iPads, just like iPhones, hold their value rather well as long as you take care of them. If you've taken excellent care of your iPad you can probably get more for it than someone else who is trying to sell a beat up iPad that looks like it has been taken through the ringer.

So clean it up and make sure you remove any surface dirt and get as much gunk or lint out of the corners, crevices, and ports as you can. It doesn't matter how great your iPad works. If it looks like crap, you won't get the best price.

The key to making a quick sale is to make sure you're honest and open about the condition of your iPad. To make sure you are representing your product, take high quality pictures of the actual iPad and avoid stock images at all costs. Many buyers will skip over listings that have stock images in them and only buy from sellers that include pictures of the actual iPad they're in possession of. If there are any minor scratches or nicks, photograph those too. Buyers like honest sellers and it helps build trust.

Include accessories and original cables

If you've got the original cables and accessories that came with your iPad, that's a great selling point. If you have the original box it came in, that's even better. For an even quicker sale, you can include some accessories or cases you've purchased for it over time. Odds are the new iPad 5 will have a different form factor meaning the cases you currently have won't fit. We aren't sure about the iPad mini 2 yet but if you don't mind offering a little extra incentive for buyers, it never hurts.

How to put your iPad up for sale, and which service(s) to use

Now that you've got all the information collected about your iPad and what accessories you want to include in the sale, it's time to actually list it sell it. There are many places online that you can utilize as well as listing sites that allow you to meet up with buyers locally. We'll cover the ones we recommend and you can decide which one is best for you personally.

We'll go over some options first that'll get you cash or credit quickly and then we'll take a look at services like Craigslist and eBay that may fetch you more money but will require a little more patience and maybe some haggling on your part.

Apple Reuse and Recycling Program

Apple has their own in-store trade-in program for that makes it easy to walk in and trade in your current iPad for credit towards a new one. As of this writing, Apple is currently offering $231 in gift card form for a 16GB iPad 4 in good condition with all cables and no damage. It's really not a bad offer and if you want cash quick without the hassle, it's certainly convenient.

Amazon Trade-In Store

Amazon, like Apple, will buy back your old iPad as well through the Amazon Trade-In Store. The only hitch here is that you'll be given payment in the form of an Amazon gift card. If you're looking for hard cash to put towards a new iPad on launch day and you don't want to wait for Amazon to have it in stock, it may not be the best option.

If you're okay with Amazon credit though, it's a pretty painless process. You'll choose the model, capacity, and color of your current iPad and add it to your trade-in. You'll then be given a shipping label and instructions. Once Amazon receives your old iPad, they'll issue you an Amazon gift card for the trade-in value. Amazon is currently offering a range of around $200 all the way up to over $350 depending on your iPad model and capacity.

Gazelle

Gazelle offers a service that lets you easily turn most electronic devices into cash. Simply send in your iPad and Gazelle will send you money after confirming the item condition. The first thing you'll need to do is tell Gazelle what you're selling and what condition the item is in. You can choose from poor, fair, good or excellent condition, and it's important to be honest when rating the condition so there's no hiccups or snags along the way. It also helps if you have the box and original documentation and cables with your item. Also make sure you check for any water damage, as Gazelle will too once they receive your iPad.

Currently, a 16GB WiFi only iPad 4 in normal flawless condition will fetch you around $275. Again, always be honest about the condition. While Gazelle is a quick way to get money for your old iPad, you can probably get quite a bit more on services like Craigslist and eBay if you can afford to be more patient with the actual selling process.

SellYourMac.com

SellYourMac.com offers a similar service to Gazelle by letting you send in your old iPad for payment with little to no hassle involved.

You'll be required to provide pictures along with a serial number next to your item description and condition. Once SellYourMac.com receives your iPad they'll clean it, inspect it, and verify that it's in working condition before they turn around and sell it on eBay. Users can receive payment via Paypal if they choose as well. SellYourMac's quotes are a little higher than other competing services such as Gazelle. A 16GB WiFi only iPad 4 in perfect condition with the box is currently going for $255 on SellYourMac.

buymyi

mendmyi has just launched a new service in the UK called buymyi that's the first of it's kind when it comes to buying used iPhones and iPads. While most others only let you choose whether the device is in good condition, broken, or liquid damaged, buymyi will actually price out and buy your used iPad regardless of the issues. It functions by letting you pick out a fault (or multiple faults) and adding them. Since at it's core, mendmyi is a repair company, it will use their repair cost in order to adjust the value of your device given current rates.

It's a great option for iPad owners that have issues selling an imperfect device for a fair price elsewhere. As of today, buymyi is offering £250 for a 16GB good condition WiFi only iPad 4. They will send out payment within 24 hours of receiving the device and they let you choose between Paypal, bank transfer, or check. The service is currently only available to UK residents but may expand to other countries in the near future. Currently buymyi is offering some of the best prices we've seen and if you're located in the UK, we'd highly recommend quoting your iPad with them.

eBay

Selling your iPad on eBay is a pretty simple process. If you've ever used eBay for selling things in the past then you know the selling process isn't all that tricky, however there are still some things to keep in mind when using eBay to sell your iPad. For instance, eBay charges fees for each auction based on the item you're selling and how much it sells for, among other things, so here are five quick tips to help you get the most out of your auction:

  1. Only ship to the buyer's confirmed Paypal address if using Paypal.
  2. Price competitively, especially if you're using Buy It Now as an option.
  3. Make sure the pictures you use follow your description and are good quality - post pictures of any physical blemishes on the iPad and be up-front in your description.
  4. Use a fast shipping service and make sure you include that in your item description. People are impatient by nature so sellers that offer fast shipping tend to sell items quicker.
  5. Use keywords in your title and in your item description to attract more potential buyers.
  6. You may also want to consider insuring your item in case anything goes wrong during shipping. Watch out for low-feedback buyers and also keep in mind that Paypal charges processing fees as well.

Craigslist

Craigslist allows you to list items for sale in your area so you can perform the transaction locally and face-to-face. This is a quick way to get some cash for your iPad on the spot and also an easy way to let the buyer check out the device in person before committing to the purchase. As long as you were honest about the condition and specifications, you should have no issue in completing a painless transaction with a buyer. And you walk away with cash in your hand on the spot.

  1. Don't ever put your personal or home address in an ad. Ever!
  2. Price your iPad competitively. A good way to do this is to find existing ads on Craigslist in your area for iPads that are the same model, capacity, and condition as yours and price accordingly. If your iPad shows up next to someone else's and yours is grossly overpriced, it won't sell.
  3. Some buyers prefer being able to text or call you immediately about an item and it may increase the likelihood of a quick sale. Having a phone number that they can reach you at is ideal. Only do this if you're comfortable with putting your phone number on the internet. This is a good time to use a Google Voice number or other forwarding number if you have one.
  4. Meet in a public place, preferably in the daytime. A coffee place like Starbucks is a good idea. It's also never a bad idea to bring a friend or relative with you. While most buyers are perfectly friendly, there are shady people out there. If the person doesn't want to meet in a public place, pass on them and wait for someone who doesn't have an issue with that.
  5. Watch out for email scams, something Craigslist is notorious for. Anyone offering to pay you a great deal more than the list price or who asks you to ship the item to a foreign country is a scammer. Delete their e-mails and correspondence immediately and wait for a legitimate buyer to come along.

Sell your iPad to a friend or family member

Even you aren't willing to part with your old iPad for free it doesn't mean friends or family members aren't interested in buying it from you. Perhaps they don't have an iPad and don't care about having the newest model available. Using this method you ensure that your old iPad finds a good home and you know the buyer isn't a scam artist.

Ask around and offer a reasonable price and you may be surprised how many of your friends or family members could be willing to snag your old iPad. Throwing in accessories such as cases can help sweeten the deal as well.

Kill Your Darlings

  • Director: John Krokidas

  • Genre: Biopic, drama

  • Running Time: 104 minutes

Rated R for sexual content, language, drug use and brief violence.

With: Daniel Radcliffe, Dane DeHaan, Michael C. Hall

Hollywood's been trying to get a handle on the Beat Poets for years. Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs and Jack Kerouac led wild — and influential — lives. But films about them, like Naked Lunch and On the Road, have never really clicked with audiences. Kill Your Darlings may fare better, partly because it stars Daniel Radcliffe, and partly because the story centers as much on murder as on poetry.

It's 1943, time for student orientation at Columbia University, and incoming freshman Allen Ginsberg is on a quiet, dignified tour of the campus library when a student with the face of a choirboy leaps on a table with a book.

It's Henry Miller's Tropic of Cancer, and the passage that student reads outrages the librarian enough to get him hauled away by guards, with Ginsberg — as played by Radcliffe with not a hint of Harry Potter about him — grinning broadly.

Truth be told, young Ginsberg is kind of smitten both by the handsome Lucien Carr and by his literary passion. He's soon hanging out with Carr in the dorm, talking poetry and fantasizing about a closer relationship.

Carr (Dane DeHaan), a young man who's anything but a choirboy, and entirely aware of the effect he has on others, soon introduces Ginsberg to a stoned young "Willie" Burroughs (a nice piece of impersonation by actor Ben Foster) and later to Jack Kerouac (Jack Huston). All of them are dreaming of changing the world, but not sure quite how to go about it.

Carr's formidable charisma becomes something of a problem when David (Michael C. Hall), his former lover and professor, won't let go.

They want to supplant Yeats' "Vision" with a "New Vision," but because they're college kids, their literary ambitions often take a back seat to drugs, drinking and pranks, including an elaborately planned but startlingly mild escapade at the Columbia library that gets them in all kinds of trouble.

Bigger trouble, though, is following Carr in the person of an obsessive admirer (Michael C. Hall), a former lover and professor who's long been writing Carr's papers for him — and who has recently been reduced to following him around like a puppy. How Carr deals with that situation gives the story its spine and also a startling climax.

First-time director John Krokidas doesn't make Kill Your Darlings terribly linear. When its heroes go on drug-fueled binges, so does his camera — at one point freezing other patrons at a jazz club in place so the amphetamine-buzzed poets can flit around them. And the director does some flitting of his own, through time with flashbacks, through space with abrupt switches in perspective, and through an eyebrow-notcher of a sequence that conflates three significant penetrations: Burroughs shooting heroin, Ginsberg's first sexual encounter, and the stabbing that will put a period on one fraught situation while creating another one entirely.

In writing circles, the phrase "kill your darlings" usually gets deployed by an editor as advice for a writer who's polished and labored over a favorite sentence so long that all the life has gotten squeezed out of it. "Kill your darling" means get rid of that treasured bit, and find a more natural way to say what you want to say.

The movie Kill Your Darlings is about budding artists who applied that advice to every element of their lives, abolishing rhyme and meter, declaring war on rules, traditions, even people who had the temerity to love them. They flail and they thrash, and Krokidas' film is just like them — as jazz-inflected and freewheeling as the Beat poetry these guys were about to unleash on the world. (Recommended)

Amazon's Brutal Promotion System - Business Insider

Jeff Bezos Amazon

Jeff Bezos

Getting a promotion at Amazon isn't easy, Brad Stone of Bloomberg Businessweek reports.

Here's the way it works.

To get ahead at Amazon, your boss has to debate why you deserve a promotion with other managers from the company. If he or she makes an effective case on your behalf, then you get the nod. If not, you wait another 12 months.

These debates take place at two different meetings during the year.

In the first meeting of the year, usually in February or March, according to a leaked presentation of how the system works, the senior staff talks about employees to see who's doing well, and who isn't, and who is getting a promotion.

In the second meeting, which takes place in September or October, the leaders talk some more about who's getting a promotion, and talk about who is doing well and who is doing poorly.

Amazon's managers group employees into three tiers: The top 20%, who are groomed for promotions, the next 70% who are kept happy, and the bottom 10%, who are either let go, or told to get it together.

This system, which was created by Jeff Bezos, is supposed to cut down on politics and in-fighting. Unfortunately, Stone says it has the opposite effect.

"Ambitious employees tend to spend months having lunch and coffee with their boss’s peers to ensure a positive outcome once the topic of their proposed promotion is raised in [the meetings]," says Stone.

Stone also notes that promotions are very limited at Amazon, so if you fight for your employee to get a promotion, it means someone else's employee gets snubbed. And anyone in the room can nuke someone else's promotion.

Disclosure: Jeff Bezos is an investor in Business Insider through his
personal investment company Bezos Expeditions.

Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner welcomed their second child, a baby boy, on Monday.

The excited new mother shared a photo on her Tumblr page of herself looking stunning in no make-up and a hospital gown as she cradled her son.

Trump captioned the photo, “We welcome with love, Joseph Frederick Kushner”.

She explained the name choice, writing, “Please join in our joy as we welcome Joseph Frederick Kushner, named after each of our paternal grandfathers, both master builders of their generation and inspiring patriarchs of their families. Jared’s grandfather, Joseph, was a rock. His indomitable spirit, his sense of family, and his work ethic are the values we hope to hand down to our son. My grandfather, Frederick, was a builder not just of tens of thousands of homes throughout this city, but of a tight-knit family that honors to this day the traditions he established.

“Both men set the standards that have been passed down through the generations and which we hope to impart upon Joseph and Arabella. They created a legacy for our family that inspires our careers as well as our love and respect for one another. We are honored to name our son after these two distinguished men. We feel so blessed with the newest member of the family!”

House Republicans Show Themselves To Be ... - Business Insider

House Republican leaders canceled plans to call a vote Tuesday evening on a Republican plan to raise the debt limit and reopen the government. They couldn't round up enough Republican votes to pass it.

The Washington Post's Chris Cillizza is stunned, for some reason.

In fact, this is the least stunning event ever. The bill would have raised the debt ceiling. It would have changed Obamacare, Republicans' white whale, in only the most trivial ways. The powerful conservative pressure group Heritage Action opposed it. Of course Speaker John Boehner couldn't get the votes.

The only stunning thing is that anyone still looks at House Republicans and says: "You know what would be great? Giving these people more power over public policy."

Roughly one-third of this caucus thinks hitting the debt ceiling and shutting down the government are great strategies to try to stop Obamacare. The other two-thirds of the party has realized all along that this strategy sucks, but they could not find any way to stop their party from implementing it — even though these "reasonable" Republicans outnumber the crazies.

Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) was on CNN today saying that his party's strategy for the last month has been lunacy. Well why the hell didn't he do anything to stop it? Why didn't he join with Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.) and stop the shutdown in its tracks on Sept. 30? Where is his sense of responsibility?

Can you imagine the situation this country would be in if Republicans controlled both houses of Congress right now? Or if we had a President whose administration gets jerked around by Heritage Action in the same way that House Republicans do? It would be a trainwreck, and "reasonable" Republicans like Nunes would still be on television saying they understand it's a trainwreck, but by golly, operationally, they had no way to stop it.

There is no serious argument for Republican governance right now, even if you prefer conservative policies over liberal ones. These people are just too dangerously incompetent to be trusted with power.

A party that is this bad at tactics can't be expected to be any good at policy-making.

There are a lot of state and local Republican officials I admire, with Gov. Chris Christie (N.J.) at the top of the list. Govs. Brian Sandoval (Nev.) and Susana Martinez (N.M.) are pretty good, too. I even think Gov. Jan Brewer (Ariz.) has a lot of merits, her opportunistic fights against immigrants notwithstanding.

What successful Republican governors like Christie have in common is that they have been able to resist their party's base when it demands they do massively unpopular things. Republican members of Congress have no such ability. And for that reason, they cannot be trusted with power.

Suspected plotter of 1998 embassy bombings due in court in New York

Christine Cornell

Courtroom sketch of Anas al-Libi in Federal Courthouse iin New York City on October 15, 2013.

By James Novogrod, Jonathan Dienst and Erin McClam, NBC News

A suspected al Qaeda operative captured by U.S. special forces in Libya pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Manhattan federal court to charges that he helped plan the 1998 bombings of two American embassies in Africa.

The alleged operative, Abu Anas al-Libi, 49, entered his plea via a court-appointed lawyer and then told the judge through an Arabic language translator that he cannot afford a private attorney.

Prosecutors said the case — which includes charges of conspiracy to kill Americans and conspiracy to destroy U.S. defense utilities outside the country — is not eligible for the death penalty.

During the brief hearing, al-Libi — who wore close-cropped hair, a beard, and gray sweatpants and a black shirt — was declared a flight risk and ordered held. He will be back in court again next week.

A key al-Qaeda planner indicted for bombings of American embassies in Kenya and Tanzaniahas been brought to American soil for medical treatment, sparking outrage by some who say he should have been sent to Guantanamo Bay. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

Al-Libi was whisked off the streets of Tripoli on Oct. 5 and held aboard the USS San Antonio, where he was locked in the brig and questioned without Miranda rights, U.S. officials said.

Because of what U.S. officials have described as a serious medical condition — his family says it is severe hepatitis — he was taken within a week to New York, where he has been under indictment since 1998.

Some Republicans in Congress said that he should have been sent to the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, for further interrogation.

“This isn’t a question of getting a conviction,” said Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y. “It was a question of getting intelligence.”

He is one of 21 men indicted in the bombings of the American embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, which killed more than 200 people. He is among nine in custody. Eight have been killed, including Osama bin Laden; one died awaiting trial, and three are at large.

The indictment accuses al-Libi of helping plan the attacks and of conducting surveillance of the embassy and other diplomatic facilities in Nairobi, Kenya.

According to testimony at an earlier embassy bombing trial, it was al-Libi, who was in London at the time of the attacks, who first proposed the bombing of foreign embassies in 1993.

Richard Engel of NBC News contributed to this report.

Amazon to open Tel Aviv office to support cloud services

TEL AVIV (Reuters) - Amazon.com will open an office in Tel Aviv to support its cloud computing offering called Amazon Web Services (AWS), the company's chief technology officer said on Tuesday.

The office is expected to begin operating at the start of 2014 and support companies from start-ups to large organizations as they move to cloud computing services offered by Amazon.

Companies in Israel, which has a large concentration of technology start-ups, were among the first to turn to cloud computing when AWS was established in 2006, the CTO said.

"If you start a business today you no longer buy IT (information technology). You spend your money on getting better engineers and product builders," Werner Vogels told a news conference.

AWS, which is the market leader in cloud computing, according to the latest Gartner research, rents remote computing and storage to other companies, providing over 30 different services.

Vogels said Amazon is focused on driving costs down and has lowered the price for its services 37 times since 2006.

"We've always know that this is not a winner take all market. There is room for many providers with differentiating products," he said.

(The story has been filed again to clarify that company is market leader according to research firm Gartner in paragraph five.)

Twitter's IPO bound for NYSE as losses mount

NEW YORK (AP) — Twitter will be coming off its biggest quarterly loss in the past three years when the online messaging service brings its IPO to the New York Stock Exchange later this fall.

A regulatory filing Tuesday revealed that Twitter Inc. will list its shares on the NYSE instead of the traditionally tech-friendly Nasdaq Stock Exchange.

The documents also disclosed Twitter's financial results for the three months ending in September. The San Francisco company lost $65 million, tripling from the same time last year.

The setback was the worst Twitter has suffered in any quarter since 2010.

A target date or a price range for Twitter's initial public offering hasn't been set yet, although most analysts expect the process to be completed before Thanksgiving.

When trading in the shares does begin, it will be under the ticker symbol "TWTR" on the New York Stock Exchange.

The news is an upset for the Nasdaq, which has traditionally been the place for technology IPOs. The exchange was looking to redeem itself after last year's Facebook's IPO, which was marred by trading-order failures and delays. As a result, the Securities and Exchange Commission in May fined the exchange $10 million, the largest ever levied against an exchange.

Both exchanges had heavily courted Twitter.

The NYSE has wooed a growing list of companies recently, including 10 of the 20 largest technology IPOs so far this year, according to research firm Dealogic.

Winning an IPO is always a big deal for an exchange, but a high-profile name like Twitter is an especially coveted prize. As long as Twitter's IPO goes well, it should give the NYSE an edge in luring other up-and-coming companies, particularly in the fertile area of social media.

"We are grateful for Twitter's confidence in our platform and look forward to partnering with them," NYSE spokeswoman Marissa Arnold said in a statement.

A Twitter spokesman declined to comment beyond the announcement.

Twitter still hasn't posted a profit since it started as a side project within another startup more than eight years ago. The company has now lost a total of $483 million in its brief history.

Some of those losses have been by design. Twitter held off on trying to generate revenue during its early years while management focused on making the service more reliable and widening its audience.

By some measures, the strategy has proven to be successful.

In a development likely to hearten prospective investors, Twitter's revenue for the latest quarter more than doubled from last year to nearly $169 million.

Twitter ended September with 232 million active users, up from 218 million in June.

The company's user growth has been slowing though. What's more, most of the traffic is coming from outside the U.S., including many less affluent countries that aren't as attractive to advertisers.

Twitter got only 26 percent of its revenue from advertisers outside the U.S. while 77 percent of its audience came from overseas.

The losses are starting to drain Twitter's bank account, giving added incentive for the company to go public. Twitter is hoping to raise $1 billion in its IPO.

It ended September with $321 million in cash, down from $375 million in June.

The company also added another 300 employees during the latest quarter to expand its workforce to 2,300 people.

Liedtke reported from San Francisco.

Redefining Rock Bottom: Another Scary Poll For Congress

It's one of the oldest axioms in politics: Voters always say they want to "throw the bums out," except when it comes to their own representative. That's why the re-election rate for House members is typically over 90 percent.

Heading into the 2014 midterms, that long-standing rule appears to be holding true. But against the backdrop of the federal government shutdown, a potential default and general dysfunction in Washington, there are signs it's reaching a straining point.

According to a new Pew Research poll released Tuesday, anti-incumbency sentiment among voters is a high point — and even the local congressman isn't immune to the anger. A record-low 48 percent of registered voters want their own representative to win re-election in 2014, while 38 percent said they want to see their representative in Congress defeated — the highest percentage in more than two decades.

A record-high 74 percent of registered voters said most members of Congress should not be re-elected next year; just 18 percent of registered voters said most representatives should be re-elected.

In November 2009 — the most comparable point during the 2010 election cycle, when 58 incumbents lost re-election — 53 percent of those Pew surveyed thought most representatives should not be re-elected, while 52 percent thought their own representative deserved another term in Congress.

Pew found that Democrats were slightly more likely to say their representative should be re-elected (54 percent) than Republicans (47 percent) and independents (43 percent).

The poll was conducted during the second week of the shutdown from Oct. 9-13.
