New roses from David Austin for 2013

British rose breeder David Austin introduces six new English roses for 2013.

By Lynn Hunt / November 27, 2012

Intensely fragrant Wollerton Old Hall, a new rose introduction from David Austin, blooms for months and can be trained as a climber as well as grown as a large bush.

You see, I know better than most that once "rose fever" sets in, there is no cure. No matter how many roses one has, there will always be a more appealing one coming up in next year's gardening catalogs.

Which means rose fever can also be hazardous to the pocketbook.

I myself contracted a rare strain called English Rose fever while living in London in the early 1990s, when I fell in love with a new line of ?old-fashioned? roses created by David Austin.

As a result of a hybridizing program initiated in the 1950s, he captured the appealing features of Old Garden Roses (roses introduced prior to 1867) such as cupped or rosette-shaped flowers and strong fragrance in bushes that have the repeat bloom and vigor of modern roses.

So before the new catalogs arrive, I am giving my pocketbook fair warning ? I?ve had a sneak peek at the new US introductions, and they all look like keepers.

Years in the making

?When I visited the David Austin nursery in Britain few years ago, I was able to take a tour of the entire operation. It was fascinating to see greenhouse after greenhouse filled with seedlings and cuttings in various stages of development.

Every year, 150,000 pollen crosses are made by hand, which will produce around 400,000 seeds.? These seeds are planted after being chilled in a cooler for three months.

Approximately 250,000 of those seeds will germinate, and the resulting plants that grow from them are evaluated over a period of years for beauty, character, fragrance, diversity of bloom, disease resistance, and potential for use in flower arrangements. Nine years later, only four to six of the original 250,000 plants will make it into commerce.

Here is the class of 2013:

Wollerton Old Hall

This rose is going to be a must-have for me since I actually visited the 16th-century Hall House that is home to one of the most exquisite gardens in England.

Wollerton Old Hall has an intense myrrh fragrance and is said to be one of the most strongly scented of all English roses. The blooms are a soft cream with hints of peach [see photo above]. The bush has few thorns and produces an abundance of flowers over a long blooming season.

Lady Salisbury

Named to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Hatfield House, the home of Lady (and Lord) Salisbury in Hertfordshire, England, this new rose boasts Old World charm and makes an excellent cut flower. The sugary pink rosettes and matte green foliage are reminiscent of the Alba roses, but flower continuously until frost.

The Lady?s Blush

?A perfect candidate for a mixed border, this Lady sports pure soft pink blossoms, a creamy white eye, and unusually attractive golden stamens.

English Honors for Grade 7 : ISM Grade Six

Dear Current Grade 6 Parents,

An English Honors Program is offered in Grade 7 in the Middle School. This program offers opportunities for students who want to enrich their English experience with literature and improve their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. The published aims and objectives of the English Honors Program at ISM are:

To broaden and deepen student appreciation of literature by engaging in a study of challenging literary texts
To foster a greater sense of the artistry and artfulness of language and writing
To extend each student?s English skills beyond the regular English curriculum
To foster a deeper understanding of how communication skills enrich and enhance the learning experience across the curriculum

The Honors Program: What is it and why do we do it?

The English Honors Program is primarily about enrichment; it is not used as a prerequisite for future English courses such as the IB Program in the High School. The Middle School English Honors Program, however, is good preparation if a student wants to pursue English studies in the future.

While the English Honors Program focuses upon enrichment, it is not for everyone. Parents should talk to their child about the challenges of the class. You need to be honest and think deeply about your reasons to apply. Does your son or daughter fit the profile of an Honors student? Before you consider applying, look at the following criteria of what makes an ideal Honors student:

Honors profile: What does an Honors student look like?

Students in our Honors Program see the communication skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening as essential components to their lives both in and out of an English classroom.
They consistently demonstrate mastery of the skills taught in English and therefore function more independently as English learners.
They achieve and maintain the highest standards of English at ISM as reflected by their English grades at ISM and in external testing.
They want to extend and deepen their English skills beyond the regular English curriculum.
They want greater formal exposure to challenging and varied literature.
They are avid readers and writers who practice these skills beyond required coursework.

How does my son or daughter apply for Honors?

If students presently in Grade 6 want to be considered for Honors in the next school year, they must first meet the minimum requirement of a first semester grade of A- to apply. If they have achieved this cutoff grade, they can then submit the slip at the end of this letter as an application of interest. This will allow each student to be assessed in the four areas of consideration:

First semester English grade: The minimum requirement is an A- in English.
Teacher Recommendation: Teachers will look at each student?s educational dispositions to determine whether they are reflective, self-directed critical thinkers and creative problem solvers.
External assessment scores: The first semester?s MAP scores for language and reading will be considered as another piece of data.
Cornerstone Writing Assessment: The Honors exam has been replaced this year with our second semester cornerstone writing assessment. All middle school students will participate in this writing assessment, and the results will be used to inform English instruction throughout the school; however, the results of this assessment will also be the final piece in determining our honors students for next year. The cornerstone will examine each student?s ideas through comprehension, analysis/interpretation, and evaluation as well as technical writing ability as described by voice, word choice, and sentence fluency. No preparation is possible or needed for the cornerstone assessment as all students will complete it.

A teacher panel will conduct a careful review of the information outlined in the four areas for each potential Honors student. After reviewing the criteria, the panel will select the top candidates for grade 6 to be offered a place in the English Honors class for next year.

Timeline:
Dates Actions
January Cornerstone Writing Assessment will be held
February 1 Deadline for Expression of Interest slip- turned into English teacher

(School must receive this slip for a student to be considered for Honors, including both parent and student signatures)
March Student applications considered and Honors lists decided
April Letters sent to parents on Honors decisions

What is my first step to apply for English Honors?

If you have read the requirements for the Honors Program, know that your son or daughter has met the minimum grade requirement and feel that he or she is a potential candidate, then please fill in and send back the intent slip at the bottom of this letter by February 1, 2013. This slip expresses your interest; you must hand this in if your child is to be considered for the program.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me directly at burked@ismanila.org.

Sincerely,

David Burke Simon Gillespie

Lists Of Home Foreclosures For Sale : Inspecting Homes ? Real Estate

Picture_003.jpg

Inspecting homes for physical defects and damages is important if you plan to buy from the lists of home foreclosures for sale. This will allow you to post a reasonable offer for the property a seller would find hard to reject. What and how to inspect distressed homes:Before purchasing a distressed home, make sure to visit it several times to check on its condition. Make a list of all the obvious damages you can see in every nook and cranny of the property. Be sure to list even the faded paint on the walls, cracked tiles and chipped roofing. Keep a sharp eye on any superficial damages whether it came from wear and tear or not.You should also hire an expert adept at inspecting homes like handymen, architects or professional inspectors. They will help you identify unforeseen damages that can crop up anytime and give you valuable insight as to how much you would have to spend to prevent these damages from occurring. They can also assess the condition of parts of the property t hat would normally be beyond a home buyer?s capacity to inspect, such as the electrical wirings, plumbing, and insulation, among others.Aside from these inspections, you should also talk to the sellers or previous owners of properties in the lists of home foreclosures for sale. Inquire how certain damages came about and who would be shouldering the expenses for repair works. You should also ask if there are any reoccurring problems with the property like persistent water leakage and grounded wirings.Research if a home you intend to buy follows safety, sanitation and building codes perfectly to ensure your familys well being once you move in. Find out also if there were any prior alterations or improvements on the property. Look over the building plans to see if local codes were followed. You can also employ the aid of building professionals to look at these plans as they could be beyond your expertise.Anyway, visit online listings providers to get more tips on how to inspect properties in the lists of home foreclosures for sale.

Honduras busts alleged drug gang, seizes $100 million in assets

TEGUCIGALPA (Reuters) - Honduran anti-drug agents on Saturday broke up an alleged gang of synthetic drug producers and seized $100 million in assets, a government spokesman said.

Anti-drug trafficking agents carried out raids on 24 sites in the northern part of the country, seizing 700 heads of cattle and 150 vehicles in one of the biggest organized crime seizures in the last decade, spokesman Carlos Vallecillo said.

Vallecillo said the group laundered money through companies and property, but did not specify which drug cartel the group belonged to.

The agents detained a local police official, a Honduran civilian, and two Colombian pilots, he added.

The Mexican government's campaign to tame its drug cartels has driven Mexican drug traffickers to set up shop in Honduras. Colombian Cartels also operate in the country.

Criminal violence in the Central American nation has escalated thanks in part to the Mexican cartels' presence. According to the United Nations, Honduras has the highest per capita homicide rate in the world, with 86 homicides for every 100,000 inhabitants.

Homeland Security spent $430 million on radios its employees don't ...

By Pro Publica
Thursday, November 22, 2012 7:16 EST

?

by Theodoric Meyer, ProPublica

Getting the agencies responsible for national security to communicate better was one of the main reasons the Department of Homeland Security was created after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

But according to a recent report from the department?s inspector general, one aspect of this mission remains far from accomplished.

DHS has spent $430 million over the past nine years to provide radios tuned to a common, secure channel to 123,000 employees across the country. Problem is, no one seems to know how to use them.

Only one of 479 DHS employees surveyed by the inspector general?s office was actually able to use the common channel, according to the report. Most of those surveyed 2014 72 percent 2014 didn?t even know the common channel existed. Another 25 percent knew the channel existed but weren?t able to find it; 3 percent were able to find an older common channel, but not the current one.

The investigators also found that more than half of the radios did not have the settings for the common channel programmed into them. Only 20 percent of radios tested had all the correct settings.

The radios are supposed to help employees of Customs and Border Patrol, the Transportation Security Administration, the Coast Guard, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Secret Service, and other agencies with DHS communicate during crises, as well as normal operations.

DHS officials did not immediately respond to questions from ProPublica about what effect the radio problems could have on how the agency handles an emergency.

The $430 million paid for radio infrastructure and maintenance as well as the actual radios.

In a response letter to the report, Jim H. Crumpacker, the Department of Homeland Security?s liaison between the Government Accountability Office and the inspector general, wrote that DHS had made ?significant strides? in improving emergency communications since 2003. But he acknowledged that DHS ?has had some challenges in achieving Department-wide interoperable communications goals.?

The recent inspector general?s report is the latest in a string of critical assessments DHS has received on its efforts to improve communication between federal, state and local agencies. The Government Accountability Office reported in 2007 that the Department of Homeland Security had ?generally not achieved? this ?goal.

DHS has assigned a blizzard of offices and committees to oversee its radio effort since 2003, which the inspector general?s report claimed had ?hindered DHS? ability to provide effective oversight.?

Also, none of the entities ?had the authority to implement and enforce their recommendations,? the report concluded. Tanya Callender, a spokeswoman for the inspector general, said the current office overseeing the effort hadn?t been given the authority to force agencies to use the common channel or even to provide instructions for programming the radios.

The inspector general recommended DHS standardize its policies regarding radios, which DHS agreed to do. But it rejected a second recommendation that it overhaul the office overseeing the radios to give it more authority.

?DHS believes that it has already established a structure with the necessary authority to ensure? that its various agencies can communicate, Crumpacker wrote in his response letter.

Orange launches smartphone app for free calls, texts

HELSINKI (Reuters) - Orange, the mobile brand of France Telecom, launched a global free calling and texting application on Thursday, in direct competition with services such as Skype, WhatsApp and Viber.

Telecom operators around the globe have suffered as free calling and texting services have proliferated over the past few years. The apps allow users to communicate without using their voice or text allotments, leading some operators like KPN to complain about the hit to their bottom line.

Giles Corbett, who developed the application called 'Libon' for Orange, said telecom operators needed to come up with equivalent services.

"The situation is really simple - either you deliver the most compelling service or your users switch to something else. What's the alternative? We want to be in there," he said in an interview.

The application can be used by any iPhone user for free, while the company charges for some premium features like transcripts of voicemail or email copies of voicemails.

Libon will be available for smartphones using Google's Android software in the first quarter of 2013.

Telefonica also launched a similar app, called Tu Me, in May, while Deutsche Telekom has one known as Bobsled.

With other European operators, Orange has also been working on a new technology known as rich communications suite (RCS), which is supposed to update traditional mobile calls by adding chat functions, live video and file sharing across all devices.

The telecoms industry association GSMA has been working on standardizing RCS for use across all telecom operators and all handsets.

Orange, Vodafone, Deutsche Telekom, AT&T and China Mobile are working on deploying RCS to their customers.

Orange said it was preparing a launch of RCS, which has been branded 'Joyn' by operators to give it a more consumer-friendly moniker, in June 2013.

Egypt protesters, police clash after Morsi decree

Demonstrations erupt in major Egyptian cities after President Mohammed Morsi granted himself sweeping new judicial and legislative powers. NBC's Jim Maceda reports from Cairo.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

Updated at 5:05 p.m. ET:?Opposition protesters clashed with police in several Egyptian cities Friday after new Islamist President Mohammed Morsi awarded himself sweeping new powers.

Police fired tear gas in an attempt to disperse tens of thousands of protesters in Cairo?s Tahrir Square, the center of anti-regime protests that ousted longtime U.S.-backed leader Hosni Mubarak in 2011.

"The people want to bring down the regime," shouted protesters, echoing a chant used in the anti-Mubarak uprising. "Get out, Morsi," they chanted.

State TV also said Morsi opponents set fire to Muslim Brotherhood offices in the Suez Canal cities of Suez, Port Said and Ismailia.

Clashes also erupted between police and opposition protesters in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria, the southern city of Assiut and in Giza, the sister city of the capital. In Alexandria, Morsi opponents hurled stones at Brotherhood supporters outside a mosque and stormed a nearby office of the group.

However, Muslim Brotherhood backers gathered in front of the presidential palace in northern Cairo to support Morsi -- illustrating a widening gulf over Egypt?s future.

Tarek Fawzy / AP

Protesters opposed to President Mohammed Morsi break into the offices of the Freedom and Justice Party, the political wing of the Muslim Brotherhood, in Alexandria, Egypt, on Friday.

Wide powers
Buoyed by accolades from around the world for mediating a truce between Hamas and Israel, Morsi on Thursday ordered that an Islamist-dominated assembly writing the new constitution could not be dissolved by legal challenges.

Other changes give Morsi power to take security measures to protect his position, which rights groups say are like new emergency laws.

Morsi belonged to the Muslim Brotherhood until he ran for the presidency and still depends on the group for political support.

On Friday, Morsi confirmed that he will move forward on his plans because he insisted they were for the good of the country.

Complete coverage of the Middle East & North Africa?

"I am for all Egyptians. I will not be biased against any son of Egypt,'' Morsi told the crowd outside the presidential palace, adding that he was working for social and economic stability and the rotation of power.

"Opposition in Egypt does not worry me, but it has to be real and strong,'' he said in response to his critics.

Morsi also said Friday that his government would pay $5,000 to the families of those who died in the protests to oust Mubarak and $3,333 to those who were injured.

?

'New pharaoh'
The changes, announced late Thursday, prompted outrage among secularists and liberals.?

Critics accuse Egypt president of trying to become 'new pharaoh' with decree

Mohammed ElBaradei, a prominent pro-democracy figure and former head of the U.N.'s nuclear agency, accused Morsi of declaring himself a "new pharaoh."

"Morsi today usurped all state powers and appointed himself Egypt's new pharaoh," ElBaradei said on Twitter. "A major blow to the revolution that could have dire consequences."

"Morsi a 'temporary' dictator','' was the headline in the independent daily Al-Masry Al-Youm.

By ousting military chiefs, Egypt's Morsi shows he's a force to be reckoned with

The U.S. State Department signaled its concern Friday over Morsi?s declarations.

"One of the aspirations of the revolution was to ensure that power would not be overly concentrated in the hands of any one person or institution," said spokeswoman Victoria Nuland. "The current constitutional vacuum in Egypt can only be resolved by the adoption of a constitution that includes checks and balances, and respects fundamental freedoms, individual rights, and the rule of law consistent with Egypt's international commitments."

Nuland called for calm and for all parties in Egypt to resolve differences through "democratic dialogue."

Meanwhile, the United Nations expressed serious concerns Friday about human rights and stability in Egypt.

Tarek Fawzy / AP

Protesters hurl stones during clashes between supporters and opponents of President Mohammed Morsi in Alexandria, Egypt, on Friday.

"We are very concerned about the possible huge ramifications of this declaration on human rights and the rule of law in Egypt," Rupert Colville, U.N. Human Rights Commissioner Navi Pillay's spokesman, told a news briefing at the United Nations in Geneva. "We also fear this could lead to a very volatile situation over the next few days, starting today in fact."

Morsi's decree is also bound to worry Western allies, particularly the United States, a generous benefactor to Egypt's army.

Jindal: Liking people is key to expanding GOP tent

FILE - This July 27, 2012 file photo shows Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal speaking in Hot Springs, Ark. The Grand Old Party needs to get with the times. That's according to many Republicans who talked of the party's challenges following the GOP's electoral shellacking. (AP Photo/Danny Johnston, File)

(AP) ? Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal says the Republican Party needs to go back to basics to attract the broad coalition of voters credited with putting President Barack Obama back in the White House.

Kindergarten basics.

"If we want people to like us, we have to like them first," Jindal said on Fox News Sunday.

Former Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez has a more nuts-and-bolts approach to bringing in some of the largest and fastest growing groups of Americans: He's forming a super PAC to support Republican candidates who back comprehensive immigration reform, including legalizing the status of an estimated 11 million immigrants in the U.S. without authorization.

The 2012 elections drove home trends that have been embedded for years in the fine print of birth and death rates, immigration statistics and census charts. Nonwhites made up 28 percent of the electorate this year, compared with 20 percent in 2000, with Hispanics comprising much of that growth. Obama captured a commanding 80 percent of the growing ranks of nonwhite voters in 2012, just as he did in 2008. Republican Mitt Romney won 59 percent of non-Hispanic whites, and although he dominated among white men ? outperforming 2008 nominee John McCain among that group ? he couldn't win.

Republicans have spent much of the time since the election wrestling with ways to appeal beyond their base of white men and married women. Nonetheless, in a conference call to big donors last week, Romney credited Obama's win to "extraordinary financial gifts from government" he said the president gave groups in his base coalition: Latinos, African-Americans and young people.

Both Jindal and Gutierrez backed Romney's bid for the White House, but distanced themselves from his post-election comments.

Jindal, the incoming chair of the Republican Governors Association and a potential presidential candidate in 2016, on Sunday said slighting people simply isn't good politics.

"You don't start to like people by insulting them and saying their votes were bought. We are an aspirational party," he said.

Jindal said the Republican Party needs to convince voters it is the party of the middle class and upward mobility. Its conservative principles "are good for every single voter" and it "has to campaign for every single vote," he added.

"We also don't need to be saying stupid things," Jindal said, referring to GOP Senate candidates in Missouri and Indiana who lost their races after comments about rape that were widely criticized.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, the GOP group's incoming vice chair, said also on Fox News Sunday that governors are key to bringing a diversity of voters to the GOP. Thirty states have elected Republican governors, an indication that "the trust factor is there."

"We've got a message that works for young people, that works for people who come to our country from other countries, and, basically for anyone who wants to live their piece of the American dream," Walker said. "I think that starts with our governors as great messengers."

Gutierrez, who served under President George W. Bush, said the country cannot grow without immigrants and the Republican Party is a natural home for them.

"We are the party of prosperity, of growth, of tolerance," Gutierrez said in remarks taped Friday for CNN's "State of the Union." ''These immigrants who come across, and what they do wrong is risk their lives, and they come here and they work because they want to be part of the American dream. That is what the GOP is."

Gutierrez said he is working with Charlie Spies, who created the largest super PAC supporting Mitt Romney, Restore Our Future, on a super PAC to back candidates that support "a path, a process for legalization of workers who are here undocumented."

"First they have to be legalized," Gutierrez said. "Then you have to find a way to get into a line for the green card. ... There will be requirements. And we'll have to negotiate some sort of requirements."

Gutierrez said Republicans for Immigration Reform is about people from all over the world, including Hispanics, Asians, West Africans and Ethiopians.

I don't think it gets in the way of communicating with the horse. What gets in my way is my aspie perfect or fail mentality. The trainer at the farm where I am now is amazing at reminding me not to over think. She is always telling me that my position is correct and that I know enough to stay safe with the pony I ride, so "just ride". When I stop worrying if my toes are out more that 45 degrees, or if my knee angle is right, or if my feet are in the perfect position in the irons, etc. I remember the joy of riding. Communication with the pony, Star, is much easier when I let myself be imperfect and I trust her. I have noticed that she corrects me. If she' crooked, i'm crooked so I fix my hip and on we go. If she's tight in her jaw she's telling me to relax. I take a deep breath and become like a sack of potatoes in the saddle. She gives me a perfect canter transition next time I ask. I'm learning to let go of my perfectionism and allow that amazing silent communication come back and I've been having a wonderful time.

Do you ride at home or at a boarding stable? I think riding alone a lot allowed me to dwell too much on the perfect or fail thing. When I started back with my trainer, and riding with others, I've been able to let go of that a lot more.

Talking foster care and adoption with Iowa KidsNet: Michelle's Story

Congratulations to all the families adopting this weekend at Iowa Adoption Day events in Council Bluffs, Davenport, Des Moines, Ottumwa, Sioux City, Waterloo and Webster City! For today's National Adoption Month series, here's a lovely reflection from a mother about what her daughters thought about Adoption Day.

Michelle's Story

Our adoption day was extremely special. I had always wanted to have a big family with lots of children. My daughter had wanted a sister as long as I can remember. We were so excited to be able to welcome two sweet little girls into our family. Jayden became the middle child with a sister 14 months older and a sister 14 months younger. We first met the girls by doing respite for them. After being at our house each weekend for a couple months they moved in with us. I told the lawyer that my daughter really wanted to be adopted before her birthday.? Luckily we were able to do it on her birthday making it a special day she will always remember.?

The girls loved adoption day. They all wore matching dresses and sandals. They wanted to have a similar connection in their new names so they all have Sky in their middle names.? All of their names also start with J which they love. I now have Jacquelyn (Jacquee) Skye, Jayden (JJ) Skyanne, and Jocelyn (Jocee) Skyla. The girls love their new names and the meanings behind them.? Jacquelyn means protector - I told her she was receiving that name because she did a great job protecting her baby sister through the hard times. Jocelyn means joyful and lighthearted. I chose that name because she is always so happy and such a goofball despite all the trauma she has experienced. ? ?

I asked the girls what they would like to share about adoption day. Jacquelyn wanted to share some of the things she said on the stand. The three girls took the stand together and were able to talk at court. They really enjoyed this part. Jacquelyn said thank you to me for taking such good care of her and her sister. ?hen she thanked Jayden there was not a dry eye in the room. She thanked her not just for sharing her toys and her house and being such a great sister, but for sharing her mom.??

Jayden wants to tell everyone how great it is to adopt siblings. She absolutely adores her new sisters and is so happy they will be ours forever. She has such a tender heart and misses children immensely when they return home. Jocelyn wants to share that she is so happy to be safe and to be in a family that loves her and that she can still see her biological siblings. Jocee?s favorite part of adoption day was getting to bang the hammer and make it official. We went to Build-a-Bear after the adoption was final and all of the girls adopted a bear.

I would encourage people to do foster care and adoption. It is so rewarding to make a difference in the life of a child. Even in the heartbreak you feel in the absence of a child when they leave, it is still worth it to know that you have given them love and a foundation to grow on. Whether caring for children through foster care or adoption, you will be blessed by the love you share. Children come with broken hearts and worries. Our love and attention is a healing balm to their injured souls. We are the providers of hope and love. You can never help another without also helping yourself. You will be blessed. ?

Shaping a security team, Obama's challenge deepens

(AP Photo/Paul J. Richards, Pool)

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Barely a week after winning re-election, President Barack Obama suddenly confronts a deepening challenge in assembling a new national security team, his task complicated by a scandal that has cost him a CIA chief and raised doubts about his Afghanistan war commander.

Hard questions from Congress, potentially bitter confirmation hearings and a scandal of infidelity and inappropriate emails are suddenly shaping the fight ahead. The White House portrayed a president focused on the economy and confident in his military and intelligence leadership, but clearly not thrilled.

When asked if the personnel troubles were an unwelcome distraction, presidential spokesman Jay Carney said: "I certainly wouldn't call it welcome."

Obama was already expecting to have to replace his chief diplomat, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, and perhaps his defense secretary, Leon Panetta. Those two alone ? plus Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, who is also leaving ? help shape Obama's thinking and represent him before the world.

Now Obama is without his CIA director, David Petraeus, the once acclaimed military general in Iraq and Afghanistan who resigned in disgrace last week over an extramarital affair.

The details of that scandal keep expanding Tuesday, including the revelation that the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, Gen. John Allen, is under investigation by the Pentagon for potentially inappropriate communications with another woman in the case. That, in turn, has frozen Allen's nomination to be the next commander of U.S. European Command and the commander of NATO forces in Europe, which casts more doubt about a military leadership in which each move affects another.

"It's a hard moment for the administration," said Joshua Rovner, an associate professor of strategy and policy at the U.S. Naval War College in Rhode Island. "It certainly wasn't expected, but if anything good comes out of it, they do have a chance to take a long, hard look at strategy."

He noted that Petraeus had taken on such revered status for his military career that he won confirmation as CIA chief with little scrutiny.

Even beyond the surprise difficulties, Obama could have trouble with the rest of his high-stakes turnover.

When Clinton leaves, a favorite to replace her is Susan Rice, an Obama loyalist who serves as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. She could face a bruising confirmation hearing given that she was the first face of the administration's maligned explanation of the fatal attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

"She's clearly going to have a little more difficult time than she would have if she hadn't gone out on all those talk shows," said Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., the second-ranking Senate Republican. Kyl is retiring at year's end and likely would not get a vote on Rice, but he said: "As of right now, I wouldn't support her."

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., said Rice could have a difficult time winning confirmation, although he didn't take a position.

"I'm concerned about the fact that she went on Sunday shows and said it was the product of a spontaneous uprising as opposed to a terrorist attack. Why did they wait so long to publicly ...change their position on it? I think she'd have to answer questions about that, no doubt about it."

Some of Rice's key advocates predict Republican lawmakers would not have the inclination or the votes to try to block Obama from appointing the State Department chief he wants. Yet others expect her confirmation hearing to be contentious and are wary of picking that fight at the start of the second term.

The other top candidate for the State job is Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts, who is expected to be confirmed easily by his chamber colleagues. His departure from the Senate, though, could potentially cost Obama's party a seat by creating an opening for the man who just lost the other Senate seat, Scott Brown.

The idea of Kerry as defense secretary, which has also been floated, is not one that he has expressed an interest in, according to people close to him.

For Obama, the post-election period was intended to focus on starting to enact the economic agenda at the core of his re-election bid. He and Congress are in the hunt for elusive compromise before Jan. 1 if they are to avoid a huge package of tax increases and spending cuts that could derail the economic recovery.

Obama is, in fact, pursuing that course. But a story involving sex, resignations, national security and congressional oversight has a way of grabbing attention.

Carney, the president's spokesman, characterized the cases of Petraeus and Allen as individual matters that reflected no broader theme or challenge.

"I really would ask you to not extrapolate broadly," Carney told reporters. "The president has great confidence in the military, great confidence in his commanders, and will continue to have that confidence."

That expression of confidence extends to Allen, which is significant given the state of America's longest war. Allen is due soon to give Panetta a recommendation on the pace of U.S. troop withdrawals in 2013; about 68,000 U.S. troops are still serving in a war that is on pace to continue until the end of 2014.

How long Panetta himself will lead the defense agency is yet another unknown for Obama. The Pentagon chief Panetta recently has indicated a willingness to stay on for at least some of Obama's second-term.

When asked whether he would rule out staying for all of Obama's second term, Panetta said: "Who the hell knows?"

Daily Kos: Nate Silver at the Chicago Humanities Festival: Thanks ...

A few months back, when the always excellent lineup of this year's Chicago Humanities Festival (CHF) was announced, I noticed a potentially appealing presentation: "Baseball and Politics: The Numbers Don't Lie" by Nate Silver. ?It was scheduled for November 9th, just after the election. ?Hmmm, could be interesting, I thought. ?I ponied up the $15 (CHF offerings are all very reasonably priced) for Nate's presentation as well as a handful of others.

Then the run up to the election happened. Then Nate and his model went viral as the world noticed and reacted to their predictions. ?Then Tuesday happened. Nate Silver and 538 went Supernova. ?Everybody wanted a piece of Kos' favorite red hot chili pepper. ?

Given the circumstances, I figured that there was no way Nate would be able to honor his commitment for an important, but relatively small, speaking engagement (in a school auditorium, no less) that meant travel outside of New York. ?No way. ?A cancellation would be disappointing for sure, but completely understandable. ?

But I was just as wrong as Peggy Noonan is whenever she sets pen to paper. ?Nate not only showed up, he blew the roof off the joint! More below the fold...

Last Friday night, an admittedly "very tired" Nate Silver took the podium to thunderous applause at Francis W. Parker School, a private, progressive K-12 school located in the very Barack Obama friendly Lincoln Park neighborhood on the near north side of Chicago. ?When the applause finally died down, Nate warned the crowd with a wave of his hand that his presentation would basically consist of the talk he's delivered for the past few years. ?

That presentation is a shorthand version of the many issues surrounding prediction that he lays out chapter by chapter in brisk and entertaining fashion in his new bestselling book, "the signal and the noise" http://www.amazon.com/...
If you read Nate's book you'll get 90.9% of the material he delivered last Friday. ?Do read it. It's terrific!

However, Nate did indicate that he might just ad lib a bit (which was also met with enthusiastic applause) and he sure did. ?Here are a few of the off the cuff comments that I recall. ?I wasn't taking notes, just listening, so if my recollection is a bit fuzzy, so please feel free to correct me or add some info if you were there.

* The signal to noise ratio (useful information to "bullshit") is getting worse and worse due to exponential channel growth and information overload, and this was especially evident in the truckloads of "bullshit" (Nate doesn't sugar coat it) pedaled by political pundits and Romney spinmeisters this cycle, most (but maybe not all) of whom apparently believed the "gut" driven pronouncements that came out of their mouths. ?

*"I don't know" is often the best answer to a question but it makes for bad TV, which is why false certainty seems to dominate media."

*The Republicans seemed to wrongly conflate what was essentially coming out of a beltway echo chamber with what people were thinking coast to coast.

* If the crash of the Republican's Orca GOTV system on election day is as reported, it was a catastrophic failure of immense proportion.

* Obama's early big money media buys appeared to be a much more effective strategy than Romney + Super PAC big, late ad buys in places like PA. ?"The 87th Romney ad people saw was probably a waste of money." ? Nate also opined that the first dollar is probably the more effective dollar anyway, whether in a Presidential or down ticket race. ?That down ticket dollar likely makes a bigger proportional difference, too (which "50 State Strategy" types like me love to hear!) ?Seed money yields a good crop.

* Meteorologists ("the heroes of my book") nailed it predicting Sandy. ?The loss of life and massive destruction shouldn't be minimized in the least but it would have been tons worse without the preparation that accurate forecasting allowed officials and individuals to put in place.

* The best thing long suffering Cubs fans (like me) can do is continue to stay away from Wrigley. ?(Not one single game from this writer last season. ?It hurt but, YES!). ?The half good/half evil Ricketts family must be incentivized to put a good product on the field...and to do it the right way, bottom up, will probably take 3-4 years at the earliest. (Hear that, Theo Epstein worshipers?)

* Derek Jeter is a fantastic, Hall of Fame offensive shortstop. ?But most of those diving defensive plays on the ESPN highlight reel are due to his limited range. ?Those ground balls are routine for others. Looks can be deceiving! Watch your data inputs for errors.

* According to Nate (and most rational observers), ?New York doesn't have decent Mexican food...but Chicago sure as hell does!

* On "What's next for Nate?" He said three things come to mind. First, he could focus on making money ("which isn't a BAD thing"). ?Second, he could focus on his work and study. ?Third, he could focus on "doing a lot of good". ?After a pregnant pause he said, "I'd like to think I can do all three." ?There you go.

Finally, I didn't know until last Friday that Nate Silver is a very, very talented public speaker. ?His vocal skills are remarkable. ?His words filled the room quite easily and his speaking style was highly engaging. I learned subsequently that he is is a former Michigan State Debate Champion. I wonder what he could use those skills to do...

P.S. ?I hope this diary gets more of you out to see Nate and other talented folks in the flesh at lectures in your area. ?Knowledge is even good for a date night! ?Personally, I can't wait for next year's CHF http://www.chicagohumanities.org/

Update: Thanks for the bump up! Bears lost ugly and hitting the hay...
