auto insurance: Methods to Reduced the Cost of Auto Insurance

With an increase in car accidents, due in part to diverted generating (primarily texting or operating a mobile phone while driving), it may be a fun time to look at common methods individuals can maximize their insurance plan dollars and even decrease expenses on expenses for automatic insurance plan.

Some stats to consider first: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 32,885 individuals died in automobile accidents in 2010 (the latest season data is available). Excessive speed is a aspect in approximately 20% of critical accidents, while dui of alcohol or drugs is a aspect in 15% and inattention or diverted generating in 9.3% of critical accidents.

Factors that determine current rates

A person's generating record is one of the primary aspects that go into identifying their automobile top quality, and if they are involved in an automobile accident or get a speeding ticket, the violation can stay on their generating record for three decades or more - ultimately increasing automatic insurance plan charges.

Other aspects in identifying prices include how much a motorist uses their car, where the car is parked or stored, kind of car driven, where they live, their age, gender, credit score and the kind and amount of protection.
Ways to decrease expenses on automatic insurance:

1. Become a safer driver- Many insurance plan providers give reductions to policyholders who take defensive generating classes, driver's education for new motorists and even specialized training for mature motorists.

2. Shop around for the best deal- Auto insurance plan is a highly competitive company so it is a wise decision to compare the protection available for the cost from several different firms and organizations.

3. Ask for raise your insurance deductible on accident and extensive coverage- By requesting raise your insurance deductible, a car owner can reduced their rates substantially. Raising the insurance deductible from $200 to $500 may decrease optionally available accident and extensive protection expenses by 15 to 30%. Going to a $1,000 insurance deductible could preserve 40% or more.

4. Reduce protection on mature cars- Consider dropping the optionally available accident and/or extensive protection on mature vehicles. If the car is worth less than 10 times the top quality, purchase of this kind of protection may not be affordable.

5. Buy homeowners and automatic protection from the same insurance plan company- Many insurance providers will provide cost breaks when purchasing two or more types of insurance plan from them. A reduction may be available when insuring more than one automobile with the same organization. Ask your insurance plan organization about this.

6. Maintain excellent credit- Establishing a solid record of credit score can cut prices as well. Most insurance providers want credit score information to cost automobile plans.

7. Take advantage of low-mileage discounts- Low usage reductions can also apply to motorists who carpool to work. Motorists who drive a reduced than average number of miles per season may qualify for a discount.

8. Ask about team insurance- Some organizations offer reductions to motorists who get insurance plan through a team plan from their employers, through professional, company and alumni groups or from other associations.

Consider these aspects, as well as the fact that some insurance providers decrease their prices for long-time customers. Those who have remained with the same organization for several decades can ask what other reductions they might be eligible to receive.

94% Still Mine

All Critics (48) | Top Critics (20) | Fresh (45) | Rotten (3)

Writer-director Michael McGowan covers all the bases here -- the long-standing romance between the aging couple, the hovering concerns of their son and daughter, the constant head-butting with the building inspector -- with well-paced confidence.

Writer-director Michael McGowan (Saint Ralph) shows affinity for the subtle undercurrents of a long, happy marriage, but the friction between Cromwell and the government bureaucracy stays one-note.

Bring a handkerchief, or possibly a bedsheet, to "Still Mine"; this fact-based, beautifully acted drama could wring tears from a brick.

[A] tough-minded tearjerker, based on a true story ...

It is about a husband and wife, partners through six decades, grappling with issues of aging, and how to spend what time together remains with grace and dignity.

While this slight Canadian film has limited appeal for general audiences, seniors and families affected by Alzheimer's will find much to identify with.

An Occupy Wall Street supporter is part of the most conservative indie film you'll see all year. Still Mine is a heartbreaking classic no matter your ideology, though.

The man-against-the-system story is good and hopeful, but the love story between senior citizens is the reason to watch "Still Mine."

Like his character, Cromwell has the timber to build great things and make it last.

Still Mine mourns days gone by without being mawkish and meditates on age without being maudlin.

It's a tender, sharply observed drama.

Hits the high notes even though the tone of sorrow and frustration does not vary.

For those who thought "Amour" too sadistic or the recent "Unfinished Song" too sentimental, here's a senior love story with the realities of aging that falls right in the middle.

This movie does not work without Cromwell; plain and simple.

Etches a moving portrait of the enduring love of a couple whose life together only appears to be ordinary.

At its best, Still Mine gives off that feeling that we're watching something private, something genuine between two people who absolutely adore each other and have for decades.

Handled with care and patience by McGowan, proves mightily compelling, and deftly sidesteps sentimentality and cliche.

... has a sincerity and an authenticity that creates a bittersweet portrait of aging and lifelong devotion.

The Best And Worst Beat Reporters In Baseball: NL West

Welcome back to Deadspin's Beat-Off, a crowd-sourced effort to determine the best and worst reporters covering Major League Baseball teams. This week, we've covered the NL East and NL Central. Today we'll finish off the senior circuit with the NL West.

We've organized the threads by team. Jump in the discussion down below and tell us why your favorite/least-favorite reporter is the best/worst. If you can, try to reply in your team's thread (it helps keep things organized!). And don't just give us the name of a reporter. Explain your answer, ideally without saying something stupid about "bias." For some examples, check out this conversation about the Nationals (Adam Kilgore of The Washington Post is basically a God, and the Nats' MLB.com reporter is apparently, well, not) or this one about the Cubs. Ian Desmond read your comments aloud in the Washington clubhouse. All players for all 30 teams are encouraged to do the same.

Again: The lists below are not necessarily exhaustive; the names are there to get the discussion rolling. If we missed someone, let us know in the comments.

NL West: [Dodgers] [Giants] [Diamondbacks] [Rockies] [Padres]

NL Central: [Cubs] [Cards] [Reds] [Pirates] [Brewers]

NL East: [Mets] [Braves] [Phillies] [Nats] [Marlins]

Possible tornado causes damage in Montana town

TWIN BRIDGES, Mont. (AP) -- Strong winds and possibly a tornado caused severe damage in small southwestern Montana town, uprooting trees and blowing the roof off at least one building.

Madison County sheriff's spokesman Steve DiGiovanna says a National Weather Service representative was expected to visit Twin Bridges on Friday to determine if a tornado touched down during Thursday afternoon's storm.

He says some falling trees damaged historical buildings, including the museum, and the roof was ripped off a veterinary clinic outside of town. He says an airport hangar was destroyed, a trailer was crushed by falling trees, and a grandstand at the Madison County Fairgrounds was flipped over and destroyed.

DiGiovanna says someone took video of the storm and he witnessed what appeared to be a tornado funnel touching the ground.

The weather service reported 90 mph wind speeds in the area.

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) ? Allegations of vote-rigging flowed in Zimbabwe on Thursday, with reports of fake registration cards, voters turned away from the polls and people appearing on voters' lists four times with different IDs. Even before results were announced, the main opposition camp said longtime President Robert Mugabe stole the election, which his supporters denied.

Either way, the country faces fresh political uncertainty. Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, the main challenger to Mugabe, said the elections on Wednesday were "null and void" due to violations in the voting process, and a poll monitoring group that is not affiliated with the state also said the poll was compromised by a campaign to stop voters from casting ballots.

The elections posed one of the biggest challenges to Mugabe's 33-year grip on power on this former British colony, but claims by his opponents that the election was tainted and declarations of victory by the president's supporters suggested his political career was far from over.

Tsvangirai boycotted a presidential run-off vote in 2008 to protest violence against supporters but said in the run-up this year he was confident Zimbabweans would vote for change, even in the most difficult conditions.

"The shoddy manner in which it has been conducted and the consequent illegitimacy of the result will plunge this country into a serious crisis," Tsvangirai said of the election Wednesday.

Tendai Biti, a top official in Tsvangirai's party, said even rural residents were told to pretend they were illiterate, and therefore had to be assisted in casting their ballots by officials loyal to Mugabe.

Rugare Gumbo, a spokesman for Mugabe's ZANU-PF party, said accusations of vote-rigging were false.

"We dismiss these allegations with the contempt they deserve because there was absolutely no way of manipulating the system. There was no way of rigging the election," he said.

Zimbabweans braced for tense days ahead. Tsvangirai's party urged supporters not to take to the streets or gather at an open field nicknamed "Freedom Square," its main Harare rallying point, compared by many to Cairo's Tahrir Square, the focal point of Egyptian demonstrations since the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak in 2011.

The conditions in Zimbabwe are different, though. Mugabe has a strong support base, security forces have traditionally been quick to clamp down on overt dissent and after the 2008 election, Tsvangirai's Movement for Democratic Change joined Mugabe's ZANU-PF party in an uneasy coalition that was regionally brokered.

The coalition ended with the election on Wednesday.

The MDC said in a statement that it received "radical" calls from supporters reflecting "the frustration, hopelessness and anger in every one of us" to actively fight Mugabe's party.

"We understand the tears in everyone's eyes but we certainly do not believe in violence to resolve this," it said.

Tsvangirai's last campaign rally in the open field, opposite the main courthouse in downtown Harare, drew some 50,000 jubilant followers on Monday, in sharp contrast to Mugabe's austere, muted campaign gatherings.

Thabani Nyoni, a civic activist and top researcher at the Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition, an alliance of 70 rights and pro-democracy groups, predicted that protests against election irregularities would likely emerge once official election results have been confirmed.

The state election commission has promised a full tally of results by Monday. No results have yet been announced.

Voter Matthew Pfuri, a Harare car salesman, said he was shocked by early results coming from polling stations where, under electoral law, summaries are posted outside when initial vote-counting is complete. Mugabe supporters have claimed early, unconfirmed results show them with a decisive lead.

"Maybe it's a good outcome for Tsvangirai. People now know what they are up against and say this blatant abuse can't last much longer," Pfuri said.

Extra police, some in riot gear, were deployed in Harare. One truck of riot police was parked down the street from Tsvangirai's party headquarters.

"If Mugabe's party is celebrating a clean sweep in the elections, why are they sending out trucks of riot police?" asked Jonah Matanga, a nearby street vendor.

Mugabe's party said Thursday it has withdrawn an unauthorized message on its Twitter feed claiming a resounding victory. The ZANU-PF party said it is awaiting the release of results by the state election commission, the only body allowed under the law to announce the outcome.

Solomon Zwana, head of the Zimbabwe Election Support Network, said it found a "wide range of problems" in the election and that the poll was compromised by a campaign to stop voters from casting ballots. The monitoring group says as many as 1 million out of more than 6 million eligible voters were not on voters' lists.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama is meeting with lawmakers to discuss surveillance programs run by the National Security Agency.

The private Oval Office meeting is to discuss concerns about privacy by lawmakers who are pushing to rein in the NSA's authority.

Obama's national security team is trying to keep its surveillance powers intact while acknowledging some limitations appear inevitable. The White House says Obama wants to hear from Congress directly, including from critics.

The bipartisan meeting comes after Russian authorities granted temporary asylum to National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden. The White House had no immediate comment on Russia's action.

The Teen Brain: Risky Business : Portland Family Magazine

Would you buy a car with no brakes? The teen brain is comparable to a car built and equipped with all the bells and whistles ? but no brakes, experts say. Like the car without brakes, the teen brain is prone to risk-taking and accidents. Is it any wonder many parents find the teen years some of the most challenging of parenthood?

Studies on the teenage brain ? fascinating research only possible since the late 1990s with the development of brain-imaging technology ? bring parents good news and bad news.

The good news

The studies offer some explanation for teens? often unexplainable behavior ? moodiness, impulsiveness, disrespect, disorganization and other annoying traits. Knowing why they exhibit these traits can help parents talk more effectively with their teens.

Perhaps even more important, the science can guide parents to better communicate with their teen about the severe effects drugs, alcohol and other high risk-taking behaviors can have on their developing brain. Youth who begin drinking before age 15 are five times more likely to become addicted to or abuse alcohol later in life than those who begin drinking at or after age 21, according to The Partnership for a Drug Free America.

?When talking with your kids about drug and alcohol use, you can honestly say to them, ?I want to protect your brain from being damaged before it?s fully developed?,? says Ronda Lettner, a family therapist and alcohol/drug counselor.

The bad news

With or without the latest brain research, teens will naturally make mistakes, and it can be painful to watch. Teens will take risks, mess up, and face consequences.

?Why take risks?

Though brain development continues throughout one?s lifespan, adolescence is a critical window when connections are forming throughout the brain, says Jacquelyn Hammen, a clinical substance abuse counselor. This critical window extends from early adolescence until roughly age 21 in females and age 25 in males.

?Most notably are the connections between the brain?s more emotion-laden, impulsive mid-brain region and the sophisticated, rational decision-making frontal lobe region,? Hammen says. ?The impulsive, free-spirited, adventurous brain of the adolescent is perfect for the developmental task of setting themselves apart from the family unit and discovering an identity of their own. It?s wired perfectly for the job to move from the safety of home into a more complex world.?

Although teen brains are wired to move out of the house, the ?caution? and ?stop? buttons aren?t completely developed just yet. That?s one reason why teens are more likely to take risks.

And while many adults think teens act as invincible as Superman, brain research shows they know they aren?t, but they just don?t care. The rewards of bad behavior for teens, such as the thrill of a speeding car with friends, far outweigh the risks in their mind.

?Some teens are aware of the possible consequences of their risky behavior and may even believe they are taking steps to guard against potential dangers,? Hammen says. ?The difference between teens and adults is teens? willingness to take the risk, to ?chance it.? They are less careful than adults.?

In short, teens see more incentives in certain activities, especially those involving their friends, than adults do. Parents can help counter risky choices by offering teens compelling reasons for making good decisions.

For example, the privilege to drive a car is not a ?given?; teens are not ?entitled? to drive simply because they turn 16. ?Parents can structure expectations for driving so teens earn the chance to drive by achieving and maintaining at least a B average in school,? Lettner says. ?An earned privilege is more dear to a teen.?

Parents can set the expectation that ongoing, trustworthy behavior is required for the teen to keep that driving privilege. Then notice and affirm the teen?s positive behavior.

Discuss positive risks

Risk-taking ? even when it has possibly negative consequences ? makes teens feel good. Parents can steer teens in the direction of healthy risks, such as trying out for a sports team or auditioning for a play. Encourage them to try new activities, such as snowboarding or entering an art show.

Be prepared to help them make the arrangements; according to brain research, a teen?s planning and strategy skills aren?t fully developed yet. However, parents who overdo it on help can easily ruin a teen?s self-confidence and desire to take a new risk independently.

Taking healthy risks and facing the consequences, from criticism and failure to praise and success, helps teens gain important life skills, such as confidence, courage and the ability to plan and resist impulses.

When it comes to negative risk-taking, it?s ideal for parents to talk with teens well before they find themselves in danger, whether it?s experimenting with drugs, cheating on a test, shop lifting, riding with a drunk driver or some other bad decision. Describe the short- and long-term consequences of negative risks: ?If you cheat, you?ll get a bad grade and you may not graduate. Without a diploma, you may not find a good job.? Use examples from news items, movies, books, TV shows, personal experiences ? whatever it takes to make the point hit home with teens.

Remind teens that it?s not only family that places limits on what they can and cannot do. Speeding and underage drinking, for instance, are against the law. This type of conversation can help teens understand the transition from being dependent on parents to independence in society as law-abiding, responsible citizens.

Role model wisely

All brains, including the teen brain, learn most effectively by example. Many experts agree that parents are much more effective role modeling small daily actions rather than having one big talk about important topics: how you treat your partner and strangers; how you handle stress, time and money.

If your family?s activities ? even camping trips, birthday parties, and other celebrations ? include alcohol and drinking, that?s what your child will grow to perceive as normal, and that won?t likely change in their teenage years, Lettner says.

Your teen is always watching, and that?s how his or her brain is learning to be an adult.

Kim Seidel is the mother of 14-year-old and 10-year-old daughters. She is discovering the teen brain research highly useful for both children in everyday life.
